What is a standby generator?

A standby generator is a backup electrical system that operates automatically. Within seconds of a mains power outage, an automatic transfer switch senses the power loss, commands the generator to start, and then transfers the electrical load to the generator. The standby generator begins supplying power to the circuits. After mains power returns, the automatic transfer switch transfers the electrical load back to the utility and signals the standby generator to shut off. It then returns to standby mode where it awaits the next outage. To ensure a proper response to an outage, a standby generator runs weekly self-tests.

What Size Generator Do I Need to Power My House / Residential During an Outage?

There are three tips to help you calculate the exact size (KVA) generator you need.

Step 1: Make a list of all the appliances you need to be powered in the event of a power outage

Step 2: Determine the starting and running KVA of each appliance on the list. Starting KVA of an appliance refers to how much electricity it needs at start up. Starting KVA is typically 2 to 3 times the KVA it uses when it’s running continuously.

Step 3: Add up the total KVA needed and base the generator size you need on this number.
